CELLO VON ASCHERA ( 1987 - 1995 )
On the 29th of November 1987 a litter of GSD's was born in the 'VON ASCHERA' kennels of Herr Jens Lewald (Germany) from which a male was destined to become hugely influencial on the breed in Great Britain.

The sire of the litter was the v' rated dog vopo v. Kirschental SchH3 FH, who was placed SG2 at the sieger show of 1986 behind the great Odin v. Tannenmeise.
Vopo was one of the puppies that resulted from the repeat of the mating which produced the Youth Sieger'85, Italien Sieger'87 and German Sieger'88 Eiko vom Kirschental, that of VA' Xitta v. Kirschental (Lasso) to double Sieger Uran v. Wildstiegerland. From that litter a male 'Vasall' was exported to Australia and another male, 'Vasall' was exported to, and was well used in, Sweden.
The dam of the forementioned 'Aschera' litter was Quanda zur Wolfskammer SchH1, V' a daughter of Pedro v. Restsrauch out of Jana v. Holtkamper-see (Dingo).
Quanda was also the dam of Res. Youth Sieger'88
Barry vom Aschera.
The litter produced by these two animals consisted of 10 puppies, 9 dogs and 1 bitch. In 1989 a male from the litter arrived in uk quarantine under the new ownership of David & Joan Hall of the highly successful
'Gayville' prefix, Newcastle.
The dog was of course CELLO VON ASCHERA.
As the earliest of his progeny began to arrive in uk kennels, his prepotence as a sire was evident. His first stud in the uk was Barbara Berry's Iolanda Freia of Vashika and the result was a very good litter including V. Vanya, V. Varro and V. Vasko who made his way to Scotland. The uniformity in type of these and Cello's other early offspring attracted many a reputable breeder, and so the legacy began.
Cello, as well as winning a C.C. and Green Star during his somewhat sparing show career was BVA/GSDL hip scored 3/3 and breed surveyed class one bythe late
Mick Wileman in May 1991.
His report reads: Height at wither -65cm
Chest measirements - depth 31cm - circumference 86cm
Bodylength - 79cm
"Top size, strong male with desired outline and croup. Powerful gait and presence. Recommended for improvement of substance and proportions"
TOP UK SIRE 1991
TOP UK GSD STUD 1993, 1994
and also currently TOP UK STUD for 1995.
Cello's influence in the uk cannot be denied.
His top daughter without a doubt was the exceptional,
Ch. Gatvilles Xera out of the imported bitch Ronni v.d Berghutte. A winner of 19cc's and multiple Rcc's she was top UK GSD bitch 1993 & 1994. A winner of two 2-day nationals cc's (1993 & 1995) she was described by Malcolm Griffiths as " a large, well proportioned dry & firm bitch of excellent type..... good reach of neck to a firm well placed wither. Firm back & good croup. Good fore angulations with now fully developed underchest...... very good hind angulation......it is in movement that she excels even though the forereach could extend still further. She has tremendous power & endurance with highly effective rear drive......she cannot be denied further top awards for the sake of starting off new potential champions. (1st OB & BCC, Crewe & N. Staffs, Dec '94)
Xera herself was the dam of G. Nilo & G. Nathalie ( Int Ch. Rosehurst Chris ) both Rcc winners in 1995 underlinning the ability of the Cello line to produce on.
Among his other successful daughters was Gayville's Yana a winner of 3RCC's including the 2-day national '93 completing the double with Xera. Yana was astonishingly typical with Xera although the motherlines were completely different, Yana being by Karrie-ann of Gayville,
(Ch. Meik x Ch. Nadia v.d. Talquelle).
Cast in similar mould was the late Janette Irvines 'Millvins Venja' a consistant winning cello daughter out of Torbell Nixi of Millvins (Elch v. Trinkbrunnen). Venja was rated V4 by the SV judge Albert Platz at the 1995 National where Xera went BIS. The mating between Cello & Torbell Nixi was repeated and produced the Millvins Z' litter, from which 'M. Zorro' shown only 3x in MPD classes won 1st MPD, BPD & BPIS at the GSD club of Scotland open show first time out at just 7 months old, before moving on to a working home. 'M.Zeeta' reatined by the breeder had been consistantly in the first four at Ch. shows in her puppy classes and was, like Zorro, a BPIS winner. M. Zarah also went into a new home.
A very well known & popular Cello daughter was Nordost Anuschie out of Gayville's Janka (NZ ch. G. Dingo).
Undefeated throughout almost her entire career she was one of the uk's most consistent bitches who surprisingly never gained top honours. Slightly more typical of her mother, she still had all the attributes passed by her sire, not least the excellent front and superb movement. She also inherited the much sought after ability to produce, her son G. Kuno (G. Zico) & daughter G. Reike ( Ch. Bedwins Siegaro) .
His daughter Conimara Limited Edition ( out of C. Special Edition) as well as being consistantly placed at Ch show level won the Rcc at The League Ch show (19. 06. 93)
Cello daughters were known for their ability to produce as much as their ability to win, one such daughter was Gayville's Utte (Evi zur Wolfskammer) the damn of Rcc's winner Gayville's Indra. 'Indi' held her own in stiff bitch competition when Xera was dominating the ring. It was interesting to note that Utte's dam Evi was half sister to Cello's dam Quanda, both being by Pedro vom Restrauch.
Add to the list of Successful Cello daughters: Karrievale Nathalie, Starhopes Mystique, Samadale Janka ( a top puppy in 1990) Darrway Danielle, Deanston Danielle, Deejays Wanda (dam of 2CC D. Granet RCC 2_day 1995) Gayville's Fanta, Vashika Fina, Elmors Tamarino, etc and you're still only at the tip of the iceberg.
Cello also had some very successful sons, not least 2cc, Rcc Karrievale Extra Special, out of Gayville's Ursula. (Ch. Cito) His Rcc was won from SYD at the 1992 2-day national show under Herr F Norgren (Sweden) K.E.S was a singleton puppy. His litter to G. Vespa in 1992 produced K. Lorraine who has 1CC and 1 Green Star to her credit. Another highly rated Cello Grandchild.
The influence of Cello in the Karrievale kennel was almost as great as his influence in his own Gayville Kennel. From the mating of Cello to Karrie of Gayville, came the very typical RCC winner & 1st JD at the 1991, National Karrievale Dieter who was later exported to Australia. He had tha familiar colour pailing which affected some of the Cello stock but made up for it in construction and movement. From the same litter came Karrievale Dancer owned by the Charltons (who also owned Indra). Another typical & consistant winnig Cello son.
Proving their faith in Cello as a producer the Pollocks, like so many others, used him again, this time on their imported female Carena v.d. Rader-Kruez (Cello v.d. Romarau) and he didn't let them down, producing for them BPD at the 1994 2-day national and generally very successful Karrievale Natz and his sister K. Nathalie. Natz, a large strong well proportioned dog was born in July '93, K.E.S in October '90 and the D' litter before him in April '90.
On the 1st of June 1990 a Cello litter was born in Scotland from which was to come his very typical & wellknown son, 2cc winner Deanston Jerrilee. Jerrys dam D. Celeste was a daughter of Lido v. Grauen out of D. Melissa. He won his cc's under Stuart Lang and Joan McRitchie in 1994, was v2 PGD at the 1992 national & qualified BH (companion dog).
From one of Cello's earliest litters to the beautiful Ch. Shercoz Sorrenna (Ch. Meik v.d. Talquelle) came the top puppy of 1990 and 1cc winning, Shercoz Gundo. He too qualified BH and later SchH1.
In Ireland Willowdale Faldo was a multiple Green Star winner as well as his success in England raids, both 'Rueben' and his sister W.Feigh were of the breed type which had made Cello so famous.
The first of the Gayville kennels then total of 4 uk champions was the fabulous sable Ch. G. Dixie (Ch. Meik v.d Talquelle) whose litter to Reboc Davos produced the top puppy G. Perle & exported G. Putz who was Top South African GSD 1992 and Res. Grand Victor at the KUSA show 1991. (both sables).
Dixie was mated to Cello in 1990 and produced a litter on 03.11.90.
A beautiful sable dog from that litter, Gayville's Wagner was shown successfully in the uk before being exported to East Africa where he had become a top sire.
Other winning sons included Auchtermill Mercx, Deanston Del Amitri, Hundark Chuck-a-Mantal, Arkleton Adventurer & Avenger, Landeth Dartagnan, and further sons and daughters far too numerous to mention.
___________________________
Cello was put to sleep in July 1995 aged almost 8 years, to prevent his furthet suffering from cancer of the spine.
His death was a loss to the breed as a whole as he was still producing the uniformity in type, the excellent movement and the beautiful correct fronts which were the reason so many of the uks top breeders used him.

No doubt his owners David & Joan Hall will have experienced much happiness with his grandchildren Nilo & Nathalie, as well as those that came from Yana and the other Cello daughters, and of course the litter by Arko v Huhnegrab to the most famous of all of Cello's offspring Xera, born just weeks after Cello's life ended.
